Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, is the Capital of the United States, founded 16th July 1790. The City is a tourist hot spot, with many of the main attractions on the 2 mile long National Mall, that runs through the centre of Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is served by two airports, Reagan Washington National Airport that is mainly used for internal flights, and Washington Dulles International Airport.

Airlines that fly between the UK & Washington are: British Airways, United Airlines & Virgin Atlantic Airways.

The Capitol Building is at the east end of the 2 mile long National Mall. This is the most impressive building in Washington.

The Senate Wing was completed in 1800, and the House Wing completed in 1811. Before the Building was finnished, the Capitol held its first session of United States Congress 17th November 1800. Reviews

The National Air and Space Museum is a short distance down the National Mall. This is probably the most visited of the many Museums either side of the Mall.

The Washington Monument is in the centre of the National Mall, highest Building in Washington D.C.

The Monument is an Obelisk built in honour of the first U.S. President, General George Washington. The Monument is the world's highest stone structure, and highest Obelisk, at 555 feet 5 inches.

The Monument was designed by Robert Mills in the early 1840s, with building starting in 1848. The Monument was completed in 1884, as the lack of funds, and American Civil War (1861- 1865) held up construction.

The different coloured Marble, visible about 150 feet up, shows where building was stopped for a number of years. The Monument officially opened 9th October 1888.

The Observation Level at 270 ft, allows visitors a great view of the City, free admission.

The White House is situated north of the Washington Monument, just off the National Mall.

The White House image

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States. It was built between 1792 and 1800 in the late Georgian style, designed by the Irish born James Hoban.

This has been the residence of every President since John Adams. Thomas Jefferson expand the building in 1801 to designs of the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe. Reviews

The U.S. National World War II Memorial is on the National Mall just west of the Washington Monument, built to honour Americans that served in the Armed Forces and Civilians during World War II.

U.S. National World War II Memorial

Made up of 56 Pillars, 2 Arches, Plaza, and Fountain, it is situated on the former site of the Rainbow Pool, at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, with the Lincoln Memorial at the other end.

The Lincoln Memorial is situated at the extreme west of the National Mall.

Lincoln Memorial

This Memorial was built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, opened to the public 30th May 1922. The Building contains a large seated Sculpture of Abraham Lincoln.

The Memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King's, I Have a Dream, speech, 28th August 1963.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is close to the Lincoln Memorial, and the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

The Jefferson Memorial is a short distance south of the National Mall, built in honour of Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States.

Jefferson Memorial Washington DC image

The Neoclassical designed was by John Russell Pope. Construction began in 1939 with the Building completed in 1943. The bronze Statue of Jefferson was added in 1947.

The Washington National Cathedral is about 3.7 miles northeast of the National Mall, Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Episcopal.

The City was the site of the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. After burning Washington., the British attacked Baltimore 13th September 1814. U S forces from Baltimore's Fort McHenry managed to repel the British.

The top visitor attraction is Fort McHenry, one of the must see places in the USA, along with the harbour area that can be toured by Water Taxi.
