The Borough of Liverpool was founded by King John in 1207, but Liverpool remained a small Town for many centuries.

The early 1700s saw the Town and Port expand rapidly through Trade with the West Indies and Far East.

1815 - the first powered Mersey Ferries began crossing between Liverpool and the Wirral Peninsula.

1816 - the 127 mile long Liverpool to Leeds Canal opened taking boats up to 62 feet in length.

1892 - Liverpool Football Club was founded, becoming one of the most successful clubs in Europe by the 1970s.

1830s - the 34 mile long Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened, connecting these two main northern Cities.

1839 - the first Grand National horse race is run at the Aintree track.

1839 - Samuel Cunard begins the first Steamship Mail Company operating Paddle Steamers on the Liverpool to Halifax and Boston route.

1894 - the 36 mile long Liverpool to Manchester Canal opened taking ships up to 600ft long.

1907 - the Port of Liverpool Building is completed at the Pier Head with its distinctive central dome to serve as the headquarters of the Mersey Docks.

1907 - the 787ft long liners Lusitania and Mauritania began operating between Liverpool and New York, being two of the largest and fastest ships of their time, operating at the height of emigration from Europe to the US.

1911 - the Royal Liver Building is completed at the Pier Head with its notable 322ft high twin towers. This Building serves as the head office for the Royal Liver Assurance.

1917 - the Cunard Building is completed next to the Liver Building to serve as headquarters for the Cunard Steamship Company.

These three Buildings are now known as The Three Graces.

1960 - The Beatles band are formed in Liverpool, becoming one of the top bands of all time. Tourists from all over the world visit Liverpool to view the locations they first played, and wrote many of their songs about.

1967 - the modern style Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral is completed as the top Catholic Church in Liverpool. The City has a large population of Irish Roman Catholics.

1972 - the historic Albert Dock at Liverpool is closed.

1978 - the huge Liverpool Cathedral is completed as a Protestant Church of England, the largest Cathedral in the UK by volume.

1980s - work begins to transform the Albert Dock into Apartments, Shops, and Museums.

1980s - the Merseyside Maritime Museum is opened and expanded at the Albert Dock, covering the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Emigration and the Famous Liners, Merchant Navy, and the RMS Titanic.
